Why have people decided to Occupy Wall Street, and other financial areas in major cities the world over? - They have decided to do this because they are in protest against the government. The government caused the country to be in debt the the people themselves have to pay off. They are angry about this because they don't want their lives to be controlled by debts. This makes their future look quite bleak. They are also angry that they do not have the same rights as the 1% people. Those people have no problem paying such debts off, but the majority of the people probably need to preserve their money for other matters. It's a matter of inequality of rights and finance among the public people.
Who might oppose those who are occupying Wall Street or demonstrating? Why are they opposing them?
- The government is probably opposing those occupying wall street because they are the ones who are making the people pay in debt and they need the people to remain under control to follow the law. The tension between the government and the people is increasing especially in cases such as these. The rich are also opposing the demonstrators because they are most likely to benefit from the fact that they are the rare 1% that make up the country. They have enough money to pay off more taxes than others which leave them with more money, eventually, which is a benefit for the rich people.

Prior Knowledge
This was at the time of the enlightement where many
documents were written by several people stating their
own opinions and explaining their own philosophies. Kant was
probably also a philosopher at this time, seeing that he wrote
his own document also based on his philosophies.
John Locke was a philosopher that during this time
and he had specific principles. He believed that the
people should have a stronger voice that the govern-
ment because after all, it was the people that made
up the majority of the nation.

Audience
All those who are afraid of having a voice within the world.
The government
The government
All of the churches and the common people
Reason (Point of view)
This was written to urge or explain how men were at that time.
In Kant's point of view, men were afraid of speak up for them-
selves and state their perspectives or opinions due to their
immaturity. He thinks they find it comfortable to be con-
sidered as a minor.
This was written to state the authority that the
government should be limited to. It states how the
government should rule with equality, with the prio-
rity of the people and respect the rights of the peo-
ple. This emphasizes Locke's point of view.
This was written to state that people have a natural
tendency or that it is in their nature to rebel against
certain actions that the government make. The peo-
people rebel against the government's decisions,
not the people that make up the government.
Paine created this to help people realize they must be
"mentally faithful to themselves." They should not lie to
themselves and believe in something that they don't believe.
Men have a nature to undermine their morality due to infide-
lity. Religion plays a big role in this.
The main idea
The main idea is that men during that time were afraid or hesi-
tant of making bold decisions and taking risks. They only wan-
ted to stay in their comfort zone just for the heck of it. They
thought that they wouldn't have to be required to use their
heads because others could occupy those jobs for them.
The main idea is that the government should have
limited power and give more authority to the people
because the people make up the majority of the
country and if there were no people, there'd be no
country. The people also should be treated equally.
It is basically arguing that the lack of presence of
the government would probably be more beneficiary
for the people because without the government ma-
king all of their decisions that anger the people,
there wouldn't be numerous rebellions.
The main idea is that people tend to trick themselves into
believing something that they really don't believe in. Religi-
on is meant to achieve justice but in those days, religion
took control of people just for money and power. Men should
never be mentally unfaithful to themselves.
Significance
The significance is that Kant is trying to point out this specific
"flaw" he finds in these people. He is trying to urge people to
take risks and speak up for themselves even if it's not some-
thing that's in their usual comfort zone. The people should make
bolder decisions to create the enlightenment.
During this time, the gap between the rich and the
poor was rapidly increasing and so to avoid such
isolation among the people, the government should
have always treated the two social groups equally,
giving each of them the same laws and rights.
A lot of the people are rebelling against the gov-
ernment for numerous reaons, but at the end it all
comes down to the choices made within the govern-
ment. Without the government making unjust deci-
sions, the people would probably have less protesting.
The church always had supreme power to control the minds
of the people by tricking them into believing something. Paine
is trying to caution or advice the people to be alert and righteous
to themselves. He wants them to make sure only the people
have the right to their own minds.

1. When and where did they rule and what were their accomplishments? Frederick the Great 1740-1786 (Ruler of Prussia) : - Granted religious freedom, reduced censorship, improved education, reformed justice system, and abolished torture, he wanted to abolish serfs but he needed the wealthy’s support - Called himself “first servant of the state” to share that his intention was to strengthen the country
Joseph II1780-1790 (Ruler of Austria) : - introduced legal reforms and freedom of the press and the freedom of worship - Abolished serfdom and made peasants to be paid with money
Catherine the Great 1762-1796 (Ruler of Russia) : - proposed a reform of the laws based on the philosophies of Beccaria and Montesquieu that allowed religious freedom, abolishment of capital punishment but it did not pass - She gave full power to nobles after the serf’s rebellion - Won control of North part of Black Sea to allow her to pass through the Ottoman empires - Expanded empire westward into Poland - Enlarged Russia empire
2. How did they reflect the new Enlightenment ideals? - Most of them based their ideas out of Beccaria’s and Montesquieu’s philosophies. They each wanted to abolish torture and capital punishment which is based on Beccaria’s ideas. They also gave a lot of authority to their people and tried to pass laws that made the peasants equal to the middle class. In other words, they wanted to give peasants and serfs more rights.
3. What are some of the ways that western culture changed in response to Enlightenment ideas? Be sure to mention the baroque, neoclassical, and classical styles.
- Western cultures were all about portraying old art forms such as perspectives or statues but after the enlightenment they used a new type of art form known as the Baroque art form which focused on grand or ornate designs. These type of art styles in the 1700s were described as neoclassical. The music style also changed. Handel and Bach composed numerous organ and choral pieces while Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn greatly contributed to classical music.
4. Think about People TODAY who you would considered to be ENLIGHTENED thinkers. Research what they have done - justify your choice in a paragraph.
- Barack Obama used a couple of philosophies to apply them to his job and impact in the modern world. He did this by equalizing people’s rights and by using his morals to improve not only America, but the world. Although racism was an issue back then, it is also an issue in the present days. Discrimination between the two races did greatly improve over time, however the rights of african americans are still sometimes limited. Many spoke against racism like Obama. Barack Obama spoke out against racism during his candidacy where he stated he wanted the people to be more mentally and socially united. After he got elected president he supported his words by appointing the first Latina to the supreme court and appointing the first black attorney general. He also made numerous donations to poor regions such as Pakistan and Haiti when they were completely eradicated. This serves to a philosophy that would have mainly supported morals or the right thing to do in a particular situation. In conclusion, Obama was an enlightened thinker because he followed his path to serve equality and made virtuous choices for the better of mankind.
